From 16th June to 10 July 2025, 18 students from the University of Leicester (UoL) had a taste of university life at DUT. The 2025 Bespoke DUT Summer School Programme was hosted by Dalian Leicester Institute (DLI) as part of its partnership with UoL.

It is a unique opportunity for UK students to experience life in China and explore the possibilities for future studies. All the 18 students, majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry and Mathematics at UoL, attend subject lectures and laboratory sessions as well as Chinese cultural projects such as calligraphy, Chinese painting, Taichi, seal cutting, etc. It is an enriching and well-organised four-week programme.

Tie-dye at Lab Session

DUT staff showcase the tie-dye, a kind of Chinese traditional craft, in the lab session and combine the experimental operation skills with the story behind the tie-dye. UoL students said that they will bring back the tie-dyed bags and handkerchiefs they made to their families in the UK.

During the four-week programme, UoL students are engaging in Chinese classes and workshops which boost their aspiration and confidence in communicating with local people. They also have the opportunity to see local Dalian, Panjin and Shenyang attractions such as the local village, Shenyang Imperial Palace and theme museums so that the students get a chance to see a different China.

The programme ended with a closing ceremony and farewell party on 10th July. The closing ceremony was co-hosted by UoL and DLI students. DLI staff presented the study certificates to 18 UoL students and also awarded the best poster prize and best photo prizes. DLI students photographed a special video as a gift to UoL students which records the fantastic moment of the programme. UoL student said that the video is short, but behind it lies the efforts of our DLI friends.

Abdulrahman Umar, as the student representative, said: On behalf of every single one of us and UoL, we thank DUT for opening their doors for us to have an amazing experience and amazing month in China, We have shared cultures, made lasting friendships and most importantly, made the DLI bond stronger. I hope to see you all again someday.

The programme has ended, but the friendship between our two universities will be furthered. In the future, DUT hopes more and more UoL students choose to exchange and transfer to DUT for short-term and long-term studies. Welcome to join us for the 2026 Bespoke DUT Summer School Programme.
